Her Heart, Her Health: From Hair Tips to Heart Health

women at a table discussing heart health

In December, Meraki Hair Salon in North Philadelphia transformed from a hub for beauty into a space for empowerment and education—where the conversation shifted from hair tips to heart health. In collaboration with Penn Medicine, the American Heart Association Greater Philadelphia and Physicians for Advocacy and Community Engagement, this free community event brought Black women together for an honest dialogue about cardiovascular health.

Here’s why this important conversation matters: Heart disease is the leading cause of death for Black women in the U.S., and nearly 1 in 3 Black women will be affected in their lifetime. Black women are more likely to develop heart disease at younger ages and are twice as likely to die from it compared to white women. Conditions like preeclampsia during pregnancy can double the long-term risk of heart disease, making awareness and prevention critical.

Guests enjoyed light refreshments while receiving complimentary blood pressure checks and connecting with local experts, including a cardiologist, OB/GYN, primary care physicians and a doula. The panel tackled key topics like cardiovascular risk in Black women, understanding key heart health numbers, and how to strengthen self-advocacy in health care settings.

Attendees shared personal experiences, learned actionable strategies and left with resources to advocate for their health. The message was clear: Your heart deserves as much care as your crown.
