Life’s Essential 8 are the key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health, as defined by the American Heart Association. Better cardiovascular health helps lower the risk for heart disease, stroke, and other major health problems.
In 2022 the American Heart Association put out a Presidential Advisory releasing research on Life’s Essential 8:
- Adds sleep as a component of heart health.
- Creates a new guide to assess diet.
- Accounts for vaping and secondhand smoke.
- Adjusts cholesterol and blood sugar measures.
- Scores each component to average an overall heart health score on a scale from 0-100.

In 2020, NFI, a leading North American supply chain provider, decided to partner with the American Heart Association to help our nearly 17,000 employees commit to a healthy workplace. Together, they created the Drive for Change: Life’s Essential 8 Employee Challenge Award through their partnership with the American Heart of Association, Philadelphia. NFI leadership saw the importance of helping their employees live longer, healthier lives and wanted to have fun with it.
What is the Driving for Change Award? The employees commit to healthy behaviors:
- Eating Better
- Being Active
- Quitting Nicotine
- Getting Healthy Sleep
Four winners from NFI will receive an all-expense paid trip for them and a guest to attend the 2023 Philadelphia Heart Ball on April 21, 2023.
