The American Heart Association has a new volunteer leader for the Go Red For Women campaign. Local business leader Evelyn Carter has been announced as the next volunteer chair for the 2014-2015 Go Red For Women campaign, including the Go Red For Women Luncheon set for the fall of 2015. Carter will lead the organization’s appeal to local businesses and community leaders to support the American Heart Association’s mission to build healthier lives, free from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by joining the Go Red movement.

Carter currently serves as Director, Consumer Affairs for the Central New York Region of Wegmans Food Markets. In this role, her primary responsibilities are oversight of activities in the media relations, community investment, and consumer affairs arenas. She also serves as the company’s regional spokesperson.

Evelyn is a graduate of Leadership Greater Syracuse and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Centerstate CEO, Central New York Community Foundation, Crouse Hospital Foundation, Hillside Work Scholarship Connection, the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, the Salvation Army, and WCNY Public Broadcasting.

During her time leading the Go Red For Women campaign, Carter says she wants to make an impact on the health of our community. “At Wegmans, we take action as a company to ensure our employees and our customers are healthy. I want to expand that philosophy to ensure we are reaching as many segments of our community as possible. My goal is to see heart-healthy initiatives expanded to minority communities. Cardiovascular disease kills nearly 50,000 African-American women each year. I plan to do all I can to raise awareness and lower that statistic.”

On a personal level, Carter understands that the work of the Go Red For Women campaign is important for her own family.

“My son Austin is my why.” says Carter. “I want to be alive and healthy so I can see him grow up. I’m excited to see the direction his life will take. Therefore, it’s important to keep myself healthy so I can be around for him.”
