While nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented, cardiovascular diseases continue to be a woman’s greatest health threat, claiming the lives of 1 in 3 Women.

“As a nursing executive, I see firsthand the toll heart disease takes on patients and families throughout our community. It has also affected members of my own family,” said Shari McDonald, Chief Nursing Officer at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and chair of the Buffalo Niagara Go Red for Women® Luncheon. “I’m encouraged by the new treatments and advanced procedures we offer at the Catholic Health Heart Center at Mercy Hospital to fight this disease and I am proud to work with the American Heart Association on the Go Red for Women® campaign to promote awareness and highlight programs for Women’s heart health.”

By making a commitment to stand with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women® movement — nationally sponsored by Macy’s and CVS Health and locally by Catholic Health Heart Center at Mercy Hospital — Women everywhere are coming together to take-action to prevent the no. 1 killer – cardiovascular disease.

Prior to Go Red for Women® only 30 percent of women knew that heart disease was their greatest health threat. Today, close to 56 percent of woman recognize this fact, but we have work to do because cardiovascular disease is still the no. 1 killer and stroke is the no. 3 killer in Western New York and no. 5 killer nationally.
