The American Heart Association (AHA) will be hosting a free Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) training for physical education teachers in the Providence Public School District. CSPAP is designed to teach schools how to increase physical activity opportunities before, during, and after school for students, families, and school staff. Staff from the Rhode Island Department of Health will provide the training, and teachers will share best practices of activities already being undertaken, including before and after school fitness classes, in-class physical activity breaks, active recesses, yoga for teachers, and family engagement events.

The American Heart Association recommends children get 60 minutes a day of physical activity, as a key element of preventing heart disease and stroke. Studies have shown that physical activity can also lead to better academic performance. A recent AHA poll of 400 registered voters in Providence concluded that 91% of voters favor having schools incorporate physical activity throughout the school day.

The CSPAP training is co-sponsored by the RI Healthy Schools Coalition, RI Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and the RI Department of Health. The program has the potential to impact more than 10,000 students in the Providence Public School District.
