“It is an honor to receive this award from the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association.  There is still much work to be done to prevent, treat and defeat stroke,” said Dr. Stieg, President of the New York City Board of the American Heart Association, Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.  “Stroke ranks number five among all causes of death and is a leading cause of serious long-term disability in the U.S. In spite of our progress, someone in the U.S. has a stroke about once every 40 seconds and stroke kills someone in our country about every 3 minutes and 45 seconds. The good news is that recent studies suggest that physical activity, like cycling, can help maintain strong brain function and mental sharpness. Cycling can also prevent heart disease and aid in faster recovery for stroke patients.”

As an acclaimed neurosurgeon, dedicated researcher,  academician, and philanthropic leader, Dr. Philip Stieg represents the core values and mission of the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association. According to Kathy Kauffmann, Senior Vice President, American Heart Association in New York City,  “We owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Stieg for his many years of service toward advancing our purpose  to build a world free of heart disease and stroke.
