World-renowned neurosurgeon, professor and philanthropist honored for improving stroke outcomes
New York, NY, April 24, 2018 — The American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke, will host the first annual CycleNation event in New York City on May 3, 2018. That evening, a leading champion for heart and brain health, Philip E. Stieg, Ph.D., M.D. will receive the National Stroke Hero Award for his unparalleled support of the Association and for going above and beyond in his call of duty to improve stroke outcomes.

“It is an honor to receive this award from the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association. There is still much work to be done to prevent, treat and defeat stroke,” said Dr. Stieg, President of the New York City Board of the American Heart Association, Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “Stroke ranks number five among all causes of death and is a leading cause of serious long-term disability in the U.S. In spite of our progress, someone in the U.S. has a stroke about once every 40 seconds and stroke kills someone in our country about every 3 minutes and 45 seconds. The good news is that recent studies suggest that physical activity, like cycling, can help maintain strong brain function and mental sharpness. Cycling can also prevent heart disease and aid in faster recovery for stroke patients.”
