Maine Heart Disease, Stroke Survivors to Gather on December 1 at Heart Association Event in Falmouth

OceanView at Falmouth and the American Heart Association will host the 6th annual Go Red for Women Survivor Gathering on Wednesday, December 1st from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM at OceanView’s Lunt Auditorium in Falmouth. A special reception for heart disease and stroke survivors will be held from 5:30 – 6:00 pm to provide an opportunity to network and share experiences.

This year’s event will feature two special guest speakers: Angie Bryan, a Portland heart disease survivor, and Kate Foley, OceanView’s Fitness Manager, who will discuss the importance of exercise for rehabilitation following a cardiac event. Association staff will be on hand with information about how to manage risk factors to prevent cardiovascular disease – which is the leading cause of death in women.

Angie Bryan, Heart Disease Survivor

Bryan, who survived a ruptured mitral valve, served as an Association “Maine Goes Red” Survivor Ambassador in 2019, since speaking at several events and during media interviews to share her story. “I tell women if they experience any strange feeling in their chest to go straight to the ER,” said Bryan. “Although my condition could not have been prevented and was fixed with surgery, sharing my experience has inspired some of my friends to get healthier and pay more attention to their hearts.”

Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, yet these diseases are largely preventable. Go Red for Women encourages women to learn their risk factors and provides tools to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle.

This event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required by November 29th using this form or by emailing [email protected]. Masks must be worn and all COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place.
