2020 Get Healthy RI Contest

The American Heart Association, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Foundation and Rhode Island Healthy Schools Coalition are excited to announce a few updates to the 2020 Get Healthy Rhode Island Postcard Contest!

March 31st, 2020 UPDATE:  The American Heart Association and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island hope that administrators, teachers, school staff, students and families are staying safe and well in these uncertain times.  In response to COVID-19, we are making several changes to the 2020 Get Healthy Postcard Contest.  We hope students will still participate in this fun activity and get creative at home! It is vital that we continue to stay active, eat well and be mindful to help ensure our physical health and emotional wellbeing.  We’re calling on all students in Grades K-5 to help us spread the word about the importance of healthy living and share what they are doing to “Get Healthy” at home!

New contest guidelines are as follows:

  • The deadline for submissions has been extended until May 29th.
  • Students do not have to use the postcard template provided by the American Heart Association – they are encouraged to get creative and design a postcard utilizing materials they have at home.
  • Students should 1) draw a picture on the front and 2) write a few words on the back that highlight how they like to get healthy and why it matters. If students would still like a template, it can be downloaded and printed below.
  • Students should mail submissions (with parent/guardian waiver) to:

American Heart Association – Get Healthy Contest
One State Street, Suite 200
Providence, RI 02908

  • Contest winners will be announced in June and prizes will be mailed to award recipients.

The contest invites all students from across Rhode Island in Grades K-5 to design a postcard that demonstrates how they like to get healthy.

Postcards will help educate decisionmakers about the importance of supporting policies that promote a healthier generation in Rhode Island.  Students are encouraged to focus on three areas:

EAT HEALTHY
Eating healthy foods is one of the most important ways to keep your heart working at its best. Choose foods and beverages that help keep your heart — and the rest of your body — in top shape. Healthy options include water, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. Try to limit salt, added sugars, and saturated and trans fats that harm your heart.

GET ACTIVE
Kids should get at least 60 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Kids who are active have better bone health, physical fitness, brain function, attention, academic performance, and self-esteem. Run, walk, and play every day — and have fun!

BE MINDFUL
Don’t forget to limit screen time! Go outside and enjoy nature, listen to music, draw, do yoga, or just enjoy quiet time. Be sure to get plenty of sleep.

First, second, and third place winners will be selected – one set of winners from Grades K-2 and one set of winners from Grades 3-5. Prizes include gift cards for Dick’s Sporting Goods and admission passes for Roger Williams Park Zoo.

School teachers, administrators and parents can download post card templates below! The entry form and official rules can also be downloaded from this page.
