Take Action on National Wear Red Day

One in three. That’s the price women pay for cardiovascular disease. While nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented, cardiovascular diseases continue to be a woman’s greatest health threat, claiming the lives of 1 in 3 women. That’s a third of mothers, sisters and friends.

It’s time to change this fact. It’s time to be demanding when it comes to women’s heart health and ask others to do the same.

A woman you know and love may be affected by cardiovascular diseases — at any age. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, claiming more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined.

By making a commitment to stand with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, nationally sponsored by CVS Health, women everywhere are coming together to take action to end heart disease and stroke in women.

You can start on Friday, February 1, National Wear Red Day, by committing to take care of your heart and to tell others to do the same. Wear RED to show that you stand with mothers, sisters and friends everywhere.

Throughout February, American Heart Month, take small steps to live healthier by being aware of your numbers, moving more, eating smart and managing blood pressure.

Commit to:

  • Be aware. Know Your Numbers (total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index) and talk to your doctor to lower your heart health risk.
  • Move more. Make physical activity a priority by joining the #GoRedGetFit team on Facebook and sharing with your Facebook friends.
  • Eat smart. Make healthy eating a priority by joining the #GoRedGetFit team on Facebook and sharing with your Facebook friends.
  • Manage blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, commit to monitoring it regularly through the Check. Change. Control. Tracker.

Go Red for Women began in 2004. Prior to Go Red for Women, only 30 percent of women knew that heart disease was their greatest health threat. A decade after Go Red for Women launched, close to 56 percent of women recognized this fact, nearly a 90 percent increase in awareness.

But there’s still more to do. Wear RED for National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 1. Make a commitment to your health and share the message of Go Red for Women with the women you love. Let’s end heart disease and stroke!
