For some of us this record breaking winter of blizzards and freezing temperatures has left us with some serious cabin fever -longing for warmer spring days where a simple walk around the neighborhood doesn’t require 10 layers of clothing and hand warmers! But then there’s another group of people, who have appeared un-phased from Mother Nature’s antics. That group is the runners training for the 2015 Boston Marathon less than a month away, including our very own Tedy’s Team, who will celebrate the group’s 10th Anniversary this year!
There was no stopping this group of passionate people during one of their many snowy Saturday training runs. After all, the members of this team are used to a challenge. For some of them that challenge may have been surviving a stroke, or caring for a family member with stroke. Others shrug at this year’s winter weather records and focus on their own record-breaking goals, from exceeding a fundraising milestone, to shaving seconds off a run.
This dedicated team is a group of runners, many of whom are heart or stroke survivors or caregivers, raising money and awareness for the American Stroke Association. The group’s efforts, led by Team Captain, Tedy Bruschi, support the fight against stroke while honoring both the survivors and loved ones lost to stroke.
On February 15, 2005, just weeks after winning his third Super Bowl and days after playing in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii, Tedy suffered a stroke at the age of 31. As he recovered, Tedy and his wife, Heidi, dedicated themselves to raising awareness of stroke and being advocates and inspiration for stroke survivors throughout Massachusetts, New England and all over the country.
Their impact has been incredible. Over the past decade, Tedy’s Team has raised over $3 million for stroke research and educational programs with the support and dedication of close to 1,000 participants.
“When I had my stroke in 2005, I knew I needed to use my story to help the 795,000 Americans that suffer a stroke each year. The American Stroke Association and I formed ‘Tedy’s Team’ to raise awareness of the warning signs and symptoms of stroke and to raise funds for research and educational programs,” said Team Captain, Tedy Bruschi. “Through Tedy’s Team, I can proudly say that over the past 10 years, we have achieved both of these goals and more.”
What’s in store for the 10th Anniversary? This year’s team consists of 33 members on track to raise $500,000. The team will celebrate a decade of passion and inspiration, honoring their stroke heroes as they tackle the Boston Marathon® on Monday, April 20th. In addition to raising funds Tedy’s Team continues to raise awareness of stroke and its warning signs and symptoms. For more information or to donate to Tedy’s Team, visit www.tedysteamdonations.com.
