The American Heart Association recently accepted a $315,000 donation from Sunbury, Pa. based Weis Markets, the total raised during American Heart Month in February by store teams across the company’s 198 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia. The check presentation took place at a Weis Markets store in Mechanicsburg, Pa., which was among the top fundraising stores.
The money was raised during a four-week, in-store campaign as part of the American Heart Association’s Life is Why We Give campaign. Weis Markets’ customers were given the option to round up or contribute an amount between $1 to $10 at the register, adding up to more than $300,000. The company rounded up this total to $315,000. This is more than three times what the stores raised during the two-week Life is Why We Give Campaign in February 2019.
“We are truly grateful to our customers and associates for their commitment to this program,” said David Gose, Weis Markets’ Senior Vice President of Operations. “This campaign far exceeded our expectations and will benefit the communities we serve. It also honors the memory of Ashley Catlin, a 31-year old Weis associate who unexpectedly passed away last year as the result of a cardiovascular issue. It is a fitting tribute, since Ashely helped start our in-store program in 2019. We are grateful to her family for their participation in our campaign, particularly her sister Amber Piermattei, who spoke so eloquently in her sister’s memory.”
Throughout February, the American Heart Association teamed up with companies around the country to change these outcomes through the Life Is Why We Give™ campaign. Life Is Why We Give inspires consumers to honor their reasons to live healthier, longer lives – by giving.
Through the Life Is Why We Give campaign companies and their customers have a quick and easy way to give to the Association and support its mission. Local area supporters join several national companies, including Kroger, Orangetheory Fitness, Pilot Company, Gordmans, Stater Bros. Markets, and Stein Mart in supporting the campaign.
The funds raised will be used to support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through initiatives that include heart disease and stroke prevention through nutrition education.
