Lawyers Have Heart Strides into Record-Breaking Year, Raises $1.26 Million

A rainy day in Washington DC didn’t keep over 4,000 runners and walkers from taking to the streets of Georgetown for the 32nd annual Lawyers Have Heart 10k, 5k & Fun Walk – raising a record-breaking $1.26 million.

Hundreds of teams and law firms from across the globe joined together in a shared commitment to boost physical and emotional well-being and eradicate heart disease and stroke. Teams had the option to participate at the in-person event on Saturday, June 11 in Georgetown or record their miles virtually from anywhere in the world they feel inspired. In the month leading up to Lawyers Have Heart, participants kickstarted their training with a Move More Challenge presented by Shumaker & Sieffert, P.A., which tracked more than 95,000 minutes of activity.

The leadership and vision of event co-chairs John Harrity of Harrity & Harrity, LLP and David Jaffe, Dean of Students at American University Washington College of Law, guided the event’s success as it moved to a hybrid model following two years of virtual races during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The energy in the air on race morning was indescribable. It felt tremendous to be back in person after two years,” Harrity said.

“To know thousands of people around the world are also participating virtually and linking arms with the American Heart Association through Lawyers Have Heart makes my role as event co-chair even more gratifying,” Jaffe said.

Day-of highlights included opportunities to pay tribute to those impacted by heart disease and stroke, team photos presented by The Morrison & Foerster Foundation, CPR Training, a photobooth station from Bloomberg Law and a post-event awards ceremony recognizing top runners and fundraising teams.

From furthering lifesaving research to protecting the hearts we love, each runner and walker has their reason for supporting Lawyers Have Heart. Julie Hartenbach, the winner of our 5k female division, shared what inspired her to push through the race:

Lawyers Have Heart Strides into Record-Breaking Year, Raises $1.26 Million“My dad passed in February 2022 at 67 after a massive stroke. He was an endurance athlete, an incredible distance runner in his prime. I got those genes. Winning this 5k race meant more to me than any other race I’ve won,” she said. “When things got difficult in the second half, I kept thinking about dad. I’m now hoping to continue making him proud and keep his legacy alive.”
