Three Howard University students receive national health education scholarship

The American Heart Association’s EmPOWERED Scholars program has awarded $5,000 to three Howard University students in Washington, DC.

November 21, 2023, WASHINGTON, DC – The American Heart Association, a global force for longer, healthier lives for all, has awarded ten $5,000 scholarships to college students from across the United States through its EmPOWERED Scholars program.

The following students at Howard University were recognized as EmPOWERED Scholars for the 2023-2024 academic year. Please join us in congratulating:

  • Ashleigh Johnson, sophomore biology student
  • Chimdindu Okafor, sophomore health management student
  • Tajhea Campbell, sophomore biology student

“To be one of only ten students recognized in 2023 is a tremendous achievement, and we congratulate the three EmPOWERED Scholars in the Greater Washington Region,” said Soula Antoniou, Executive Director of the American Heart Association, Greater Washington Region. “As aspiring leaders in health care, these students are striving toward a future where every person has access to the resources and care they need to thrive.”

The American Heart Association’s EmPOWERED Scholars program awards scholarships to enrolled undergraduate students who volunteer in their communities and give their time to community-based organizations, student-led organizations and other groups that address food insecurity, safe housing, job opportunities, access to health care and other conditions that can result in health disparities. Applicants had to meet enrollment and GPA guidelines and submit an essay.

In addition to receiving a scholarship, scholars become part of the EmPOWERED to Serve™ network of ambassadors and alumni who support the Association’s mission.
