CycleNation™ Begins May 2: Month-long Digital Program Helps Get Vermonters Active

The American Heart Association is pleased to announce that the Vermont CycleNation™ event will kick off during American Stroke Month in May. Starting on May 2nd, participants can track their activity by downloading the CycleNation app or using Strava when signing up. Activities could include stationary or outdoor biking, or activities participants enjoy, keeping them engaged and active.

Throughout May, companies and individuals can participate in tracked fitness activities and fundraising. The goal is to challenge themselves by selecting an activity goal to keep moving and a fundraising goal to support the Association in Vermont. The month-long program will conclude with a digital celebration on June 1st.

“CycleNation is a way for you, your coworkers, and family to get active and support the work of the Association,” said Wes Snyder, the Vermont Association’s Event Director. “As we head outdoors more this spring, and especially during the pandemic, we encourage everyone to stay active and exercise to decrease their risk of stroke and heart disease.”

Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, is the No. 1 killer in the nation responsible for every 1 in 3 deaths. Recent studies suggest that physical activity, like cycling, can help maintain strong brain function, processing speed, and mental sharpness. In addition, cycling is known to strengthen heart muscles, lower resting pulse and reduce cholesterol.

Stroke is a leading cause of debilitating disease in the U.S., and it is the No. 2 cause of death in the world. By working together, participants can help ensure that fewer patients and their families will suffer from this largely preventable disease. The CycleNation™ event is locally sponsored by PC Construction, Kinney Drugs Foundation, Local 22 and Local 44, and Star 92.9.

“Join CycleNation with a team or by yourself and make a difference in the brain and heart health of all Vermonts,” said Snyder. “This event brings a new and exciting energy to our organization and we can’t wait to see it grow over the next several years. Together, let’s move to make a difference in the lives of the people we love.”
