Dr. Jane W. Newburger, a celebrated leader in pediatric cardiology and associate chair for academic affairs in the cardiology department at Boston Children’s Hospital, will be honored with the prestigious Eugene Braunwald Academic Mentorship Award at the American Heart Association’s upcoming Scientific Sessions.
The award, named after renowned cardiologist Eugene Braunwald, celebrates Newburger’s remarkable career in training and mentoring the next generation of physicians and researchers. She will receive the award on November 17 in Chicago during the Association’s annual conference, which draws experts from around the world to discuss advancements in cardiovascular science.
Dr. Newburger has dedicated over four decades to her dual roles at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where she holds the Commonwealth Professorship of Pediatrics. With a legacy of guiding nearly 60 mentees, many now prominent figures in medicine, Newburger’s influence extends beyond patient care to groundbreaking research and training. Her mentoring contributions have been recognized previously by Harvard with both the Silen Lifetime Mentoring Award and the Joseph P. Martin Award for the Advancement of Women Faculty.
“Dr. Jane Newburger’s work as a mentor has been invaluable to advancing pediatric cardiology,” said Dr. Keith Churchwell, the American Heart Association’s volunteer president. “Her leadership, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic, has been a beacon of progress in the field.”
