Weis Markets makes donation to support heart and stroke health through Life is Why™ campaign

The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, recently accepted a $140,000 donation from Sunbury, Pennsylvania based Weis Markets. The donation was raised in-store by Weis associates and customers in support of the American Heart Association’s Life is Why campaign that will help fund investments in cardiovascular research, improve patient outcomes, advocate for policies that promote community health and educate people about healthy living. A check presentation took place at the Weis Markets store in York on April 4.

The donation was raised by Weis Markets store teams and customers across the company’s 198 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia during American Heart Month in February through their annual Life is Why campaign. Over the past seven years, Weis Markets and its associates have generated more than $1.5 million in customer and corporate donations in support of the American Heart Association.

“Heart disease and stroke are significant issues within our communities and impact the quality of life for our customers and associates,” said Weis Markets Vice President of Advertising and Marketing Maria Rizzo “Weis Markets is honored to once again support the American Heart Association in their life-saving work to eliminate cardiovascular disease and stroke. We’re proud to partner with an organization that does such wonderful work.”

“More than 6 in 10 adults in the United States will develop some type of cardiovascular disease in the next 30 years,” said Ashley Schade, region senior vice president at the American Heart Association. “That is why the Association is so grateful to collaborate with retailers like Weis Markets to give consumers all across the region an opportunity to be a part of the progress toward overcoming today’s biggest health challenges.”

Donations through the Life is Why campaign—no matter the amount—allow the Association to implement initiatives such as:

  • Funding research that can improve health outcomes for heart and stroke patients;
  • Training more than 2.5 million high school students in CPR annually;
  • Supporting the work of local entrepreneurs and organizations working to improve health outcomes in under-resourced communities.
