American Heart Association announces 2024 Maine Heart Walk leadership

Cardiovascular disease, which includes stroke, is the leading cause of death in Maine. The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health, today announced that the 2024 Maine Heart Walk will take place on May 19th. The Heart Walk is part of a community campaign focused on engaging local companies, corporations and their employees to join the fight against heart disease and stroke.

Charlie Therrien of Northern Light Health is the 2024 Maine Heart Walk Chair

This major Association fundraiser will be chaired by Charlie Therrien, senior vice president of Northern Light Health and president of Northern Light Mercy Hospital. Therrien and his committee have set a goal to raise $545,000 through corporate donations and walk teams.

“I’m excited to lead this very successful, longtime event here in Maine as the American Heart Association celebrates 100 years of saving and improving lives,” said Therrien. “I lost my mother to a stroke and my family has a significant history of heart disease. The good news is that heart disease and stroke are largely preventable and how you eat, move and manage stress impacts your well-being. The Heart Walk provides resources, tools and activities to support both mental and physical well-being for employers and employees.”

The Heart Walk will kick off with a morning celebration hosted by Channel 8 WMTW’s Kathleen Jordan and 101.9 POR’s Courtney Ross. The program will include a local heart disease survivor speaker, stroke prevention information, and useful prevention information aimed at inspiring people to improve their heart and brain health.

As chair of the Maine Heart Walk, Therrien will lead a team of local executives to recruit companies and organizations to raise funds for the American Heart Association while leading action-oriented conversations about employee health, corporate engagement, community health and community transformation.
