Simple Cooking with Heart Train-the-Trainer Program Application

The landscape and culture of food and food preparation has changed. Three generations of Americans have not been taught to cook at home or at school. Stressed families lack the time and/or skills to prepare healthy meals at home. In fact, 50 percent of their food dollars are spent away from home. The more people eat out – particularly at fast-food restaurants – the more calories, fat and sodium they consume, and away-from-home meals typically contain fewer fruits, vegetables and whole grains than food prepared at home.

The Simple Cooking with Heart Train-the-Trainer program is designed to empower community organizations and ambassadors by teaching them – using a science-based curriculum that adheres to the American Heart Association’s (AHA) nutritional guidelines – how to train others to prepare healthy meals; thus, enhancing efforts to:

  • Increase the number of meals prepared and eaten at home, increasing the amount of fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains prepared and consumed
  • Raise awareness of the health and economic benefits of preparing meals at home
  • Increase individual confidence, skills, and techniques to prepare meals at home
