You don’t have to go too far to find someone who lives with heart disease or stroke. Although they are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of all Americans, the Capital Region has a long history of great care for these diseases – which means more people are living longer and healthier lives.

Dr. John Bennett, president and CEO of CDPHP®, will share some of the history of heart disease treatment in the Capital Region when he chairs the Capital Region Heart Ball on Saturday, March 5, at The Hilton Garden Inn in Troy. Dr. Bennett is a cardiologist who has served patients in the Capital Region for more than 30 years.

The Heart Ball draws the top medical and business people in the area who gather to help fund the research and programs of the American Heart Association in the Capital Region. Currently, our region receives about $2 million in research funding from the American Heart Association.

“From research to programming, the American Heart Association is making a difference in the Capital Region and beyond. The Heart Ball is a great example of how the AHA brings supporters together to continue that mission,” Bennett said. “As a physician-founded health plan, CDPHP has been a longtime supporter of the AHA. We are working together to build stronger, healthier communities. My role as the Capital Region Heart Ball chair is a natural fit.”

Prior to joining CDPHP, Bennett practiced cardiology in the Capital District for 25 years with Albany Associates in Cardiology and Prime Care Physicians. He served as chief medical officer and chief of cardiology at Albany Memorial Hospital, as well as director of the heart program at Albany Memorial.

“We’re honored that Dr. Bennett is chairing the Capital Region Heart Ball,” said Barb Hess, chief administrative officer of SEFCU and chair of the Capital Region Advisory Board of the American Heart Association. “The Capital Region Heart Ball is a terrific event that brings the community together to make significant change in heart health in the Capital Region.”

Dr. Edward Bennett, Professor of Surgery, Co-Chair of Structural Heart Program and former Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Albany Medical Center, will receive the Donald Led Duke Heart Hero award at the Heart Ball. Named for the late Donald Led Duke, the annual award honors someone who has made a significant contribution to the Capital Region.

Assisting Dr. Bennett with the Heart Ball is an executive leadership team that includes James Barba of Albany Medical Center; Charles Carletta of RPI; Peter Cosgrove of First Niagara Financial Group; C.J.
