Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall screens blood pressure, raises awareness on World Stroke Day

Tuesday, October 29 was World Stroke Day, and the American Heart Association teamed up with Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall and Woodbury Common Premium Outlets to raise awareness about the warning signs of stroke and provide hands-on education and health screenings. People learned how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T.

“It’s really an honor to participate with the American Heart Association in promoting awareness about stroke, especially on World Stroke Day,” said Beverly Keefer, RN, MSN, BSN, CNML, Director Cardiovascular Services, Cath Lab/IR for St. Luke’s Cornwall.

“It’s important for us to care for our health, and also important to know the risk factors so that we can prevent strokes,” said Keefer–who serves as our Tri-County Heart Walk Chairperson.

Keefer, who led the team conducting today’s screenings pointed out that stroke is largely preventable. “Stroke is the leading cause of disability, but there are a few simple things you can do prevent stroke. High blood pressure is one of the most important risk factors–and it’s often missed,” added Keefer.

That’s why it’s so important that we meet people where they are–in their local communities–promoting awareness; folks stopped by throughout the morning to learn more about risk and know their blood pressure numbers during the St. Luke’s event in Market Hall.

“I am so proud to work with a company that advances health and wellness in our community,” said Area Director of Business Development for Woodbury Common Premium Outlets Fred Marione.
