What role does your mother play in your life? How does your relationship with your daughter affect your outlook on life? Is there one woman in particular who has helped you get where you are?
On Thursday, May 14, from noon to 1 p.m., the American Heart Association invites you to honor the special women in your life during the Virtual Go Red for Women Mother’s Day Tea that will be held on Zoom.
“The Go Red for Women Luncheon usually takes place in May, but we have moved that to November,” said Sara Rindenello, co-chair of the 2020 Go Red for Women Luncheon and communications manager, community development, at Albany Med, the Life is Why sponsor of the American Heart Association. “But women’s heart health is still critically important, and the Go Red for Women movement in the Capital Region is uplifting and powerful. We are looking forward to gathering virtually on May 14 and drawing strength from one another. We’re also proud that the American Heart Association is investing in research to learn more about the connection between cardiovascular diseases and COVID-19.”
“Sara and I both work in health care, and now more than ever, we know how important it is for women to take care of themselves,” said Victoria Hostig, CDPHP director, community relations and executive director, CDPHP The Foundation. “The Go Red movement, and this Mother’s Day Tea, will provide practical tips for how to do that during these difficult times. By supporting the mission of the American Heart Association, we will be investing in the health of the women who come after us.”
The one-hour virtual event will feature:
- Nancy Brown, the CEO of the American Heart Association, who will talk about work the American Heart Association is doing in response to COVID-19
- Adanna Akujuo, cardiothoracic surgeon at Albany Med, and president of the Capital Region Board of Directors of the American Heart Association
- Ellie Wilson of Price Chopper/Market 32 and Maria Decker of Maria’s Healthy Bowls and Smoothies, who will provide a cooking demo
- Nicole and Lisa Hart, who will talk about Nicole’s health journey
- Elizabeth and Grey Masko of the Fred Astaire Dance Studios, who will lead an interactive dance lesson
- Disha Mookherjee of Saratoga Hospital, who will offer a heart-centered mindfulness activity
- Eliz Greene, survivor and motivational speaker, who will give a preview of her keynote address to be delivered at the Go Red for Women Luncheon in November
Benita Zahn of WNYT NewsChannel 13 will emcee the one-hour event.
“I have a number of cardiovascular issues, which culminated in a stroke when I was 27,” said Nicole Hart, now 31. “My mother has been with me every step of the way, and I’m grateful that we can share our story at Thursday’s Virtual Go Red for Women Mother’s Day Tea. I am lucky to be here, and I want everyone to know the signs and symptoms of heart disease and stroke, and act quickly should anything happen.”
“I’m proud of the way that the American Heart Association has responded to COVID-19, by funding research projects to investigate the connection between cardiovascular diseases and the Coronavirus; setting up a patient registry that will allow us to continue to learn about the virus in the future; and providing education about oxygenation ventilation,” said Theresa Petrone Butts, chair of the 2020 Capital Region Board of Directors of the American Heart Association and Lead, IT Vendor Management at MVP Healthcare. “There is a plethora of materials for consumers on heart.org, and I know that every one of us can use assistance with healthy food, exercise and our mental health in these trying times. Having this virtual Go Red event will provide us all with camaraderie and information, which will make us strong in the face of this pandemic.”
