Tiffany M. Powell-Wiley, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute is the 2021 recipient of the American Heart Association’s Population Research Prize to be presented on Sunday, Nov. 14 during the Presidential Session of the Association’s Scientific Sessions 2021.
The Population Research Prize recognizes Dr. Powell-Wiley for her outstanding contributions to cardiovascular science and leadership in cardiovascular population research. She was selected as the 2021 award recipient for her ongoing research on the social determinants of obesity and cardiovascular disease and efforts to improve health outcomes in high-risk populations. Currently, Dr. Powell-Wiley is leading a multi-year clinical trial to understand the determinants of health in Washington D.C.’s at-risk communities.
“I am extremely honored to be the 2021 recipient of the AHA’s Population Research Prize,” Dr. Powell-Wiley said. “In my career, I am thankful that I have been able to collaborate with and learn from partners who are advocating to improve cardiovascular health in their communities and providing a voice for those who have been marginalized in the health care system.”
A new research study co-authored by Dr. Powell-Wiley explores associations between neighborhood perceptions and nutrition and physical activity aimed at weight loss. The study considers how favorable neighborhood perceptions impact weight loss behaviors associated with nutrition and physical activity while considering interventions for shifting neighborhood perceptions to improve nutrition and physical activity in African Americans.
This research is presented as part of Scientific Sessions 2021. As the largest cardiovascular health conference in the world, Scientific Sessions is a premier global exchange of the latest scientific advancements, research and evidence-based clinical practice updates in cardiovascular science. The virtual conference takes place from Saturday, Nov. 13 through Monday, Nov. 15. Registration is open now on Heart.org.
