Take the #MoveMoreDC Challenge to Get More Steps in for National Walking Day

The American Heart Association and Live Fierce sponsor Sheehy Auto Stores are challenging everyone to track 10,000 steps or more in honor of National Walking Day, Wednesday, April 5.  The day unites millions across the country in a commitment to live a healthier lifestyle and get physically active. Walking is one of the simplest ways to get active and stay active. With each step you take, you travel further down the path to a healthier lifestyle.

The #MoveMoreDC Challenge is an exciting, yet simple social media challenge with 3 steps:

  • 1 – WALK: Track 10,000 steps or more in support of National Walking Day! Take photos of your walk and the device you used to track your steps.
  • 2 – SHARE: Post your pictures and use #MoveMoreDC to challenge 3 friends to do the same on social media. Tag the American Heart Association Greater Washington Region (Facebook: @GreaterWashingtonAHA) and Instagram/Twitter @HeartofGWR) to let us know you’ve issued the challenge! Throughout National Walking Day we’ll be posting about National Walking Day and we’d love for you to comment, like and share these lifesaving messages!
  • 3 — JOIN: Keep the momentum going by getting involved with the American Heart Association Heart Challenge events like Lawyers Have Heart 10K, 5K and Fun Walk on May 20 (www.lawyershaveheartdc.org) and the Greater Washington Region Heart Walk on November 4 (www.greaterwashingtonheartwalk.org).

One in four U.S. adults sit for longer than eight hours each day, which can hurt your physical and mental health. Physical

activity is a powerful tool — and a mood booster. It also helps us reduce stress and lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends getting at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both preferably spread throughout the week.

The #MoveMoreDC Challenge is one of the many fun ways to be a part of the Association’s Heart Challenge, a suite of activities including the Heart Walk and Lawyers Have Heart, both locally sponsored by Sheehy Auto Stores, and year-round activities like movement challenges and more.  The Heart Challenge aims to get people to move more and raise funds that advance science and save and improve lives across the Greater Washington Region.
