American Heart Association, Southern New England announces 2024-2025 board of directors

Dr. Edward McGookin, President of Coastal Medical Physicians, Inc., was named president of Southern New England’s board.

The American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, announced new leadership and members for its 2024-25 Southern New England board of directors. Dr. Edward McGookin, MD, MHCDS, FAAP, President of Coastal Medical, will serve as board president during the Association’s centennial year.

“As a pediatrician who has worked with many families with children with congenital heart disease, it is immensely important to have the resources, research funding, and educational support of the American Heart Association for families in our communities living with heart disease,” shared Dr. McGookin.

“As we celebrate 100 years of life-saving work, I am honored to welcome Dr. McGookin to help us lead the American Heart Association’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of our community,” said Michelle Clark, executive director for the American Heart Association, Southern New England. “Volunteers are the heartbeat of this organization. Dr. McGookin is a compassionate leader with a wealth of knowledge to lend to our organization, and I look forward to working with him to advance the mission of the Association and improve the lives of people across Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.”  

Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, Dr. McGookin moved to Rhode Island in 1994 for his pediatric residency at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. A graduate of LeMoyne College and SUNY Upstate Medical Center Medical School, Dr. McGookin is passionate about improving the health of all Southern New Englanders. Dr. McGookin resides in Hope Valley with his wife, Sheryl.

The Southern New England American Heart Association serves Rhode Island and surrounding communities in Southeastern Massachusetts.
