VIDEO: Boston hosts first webinar on heart health in South Asian communities

South Asians face a significant health disparity when it comes to cardiovascular wellness. Despite being at higher risk for heart disease and stroke, this group is often underrepresented in studies and resources focused on cardiovascular health.

This gap in representation means limited data and fewer targeted resources for a community that faces a higher risk of heart disease compared to the general population. To address this, the American Heart Association in Greater Boston has introduced a new initiative: a webinar series called “Community Conversations on South Asian Heart Health.”

Dr. Ami Bhatt

This monthly series aims to connect South Asian communities with leading medical experts to shed light on the unique heart health challenges they face. In each webinar, speakers delve into key topics ranging from genetic predispositions to lifestyle factors, empowering attendees with knowledge to make informed choices about their heart health.

The sessions are moderated by Dr. Ami Bhatt, a cardiologist and president emeritus of the American Heart Association’s Board of Directors in Greater Boston. Dr. Bhatt’s insights and experience in cardiovascular medicine provide an engaging platform for open dialogue on these pressing issues.

The inaugural webinar was held on Tuesday, Oct. 29, and featured a presentation by Dr. Aniruddh Patel, a cardiologist from Massachusetts General Hospital. Titled “Genes or Lifestyle – What Explains the Higher Risk of Heart Disease in South Asians?”, the session explored the complex interplay between genetic and lifestyle factors contributing to elevated heart disease risks in the South Asian community.

By creating this dedicated space for conversation and knowledge-sharing, the Association hopes to support South Asian communities in understanding and addressing their unique cardiovascular health challenges. The series is part of the Association’s broader commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable approach to heart health that reaches all communities.
