Dr. Matthew Summers Named 2022 Grinnan Award winner in Hampton Roads

The American Heart Association Hampton Roads hosted Coastal Nights, the 2022 Heart & Stroke Ball in Virginia Beach, VA, the first in-person Heart & Stroke Ball for the market since 2019. The program was filled with impact and included a tribute to 2022 Chair, Thomas Hasty, a performance from billboard chart topping sax-man, Elan Trotman, a survivor story featuring a local executive and his miracle testimony, as well as the announcement of Matthew R. Summers, M.D. as the 2022 R. Bryan Grinnan, M.D. Memorial Research Award winner.

Established in 1991 in honor of the founder and president of the American Heart Association Hampton Roads board, the R. Bryan Grinnan, M.D. Memorial Research Award honors an outstanding individual who has served to make the Hampton Roads community a better place through their investment of time and/or a financial contribution in support of heart and brain health.

“Every day I have the opportunity to make an immediate impact on a patient’s life, to give someone more time with their family and to do the things they enjoy. These procedures involve a lot of risk and stress, but nothing could be more rewarding,” expressed Dr. Summers. After graduating from the University of Richmond, Dr. Summers earned his medical degree from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at Duke University. In his five years of cardiology fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Summers trained to care for the most critically ill and complex heart disease patients. Dr. Summers performs complex coronary and structural interventions, including transcatheter aortic valve replacements, coronary stent procedures requiring mechanical support and chronic total occlusion interventions. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and has published several clinical research studies in top medical journals.

Dr. Summers was presented his award during the Heart & Stroke Ball by 2021 Grinnan Award winner, and colleague, Dr. Keith Newby, Cardiologist with Fort Norfolk Cardiology and Medical Director, Health Equity, Sentara Healthcare.
