CycleNation Comes To Westchester To Help Prevent Stroke: Dr. Yafell Serulle serves as Chair

The American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, will host its first-ever CycleNation in Westchester on Friday, May 1, 2020 at Yonkers Brewing Company, 92 Main Street, Yonkers. Yafell Serulle, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Neuroendovascular Surgery at Phelps Hospital Northwell Health and a member of the Department of Neurology at Lenox Hill Hospital, will serve as Chair of this stroke-centric event.

CycleNation is a movement to empower the nation to use cycling to become brain and heart healthy, raise funds to continue vital community programs and support research to end stroke and heart disease.

Dr. Serulle specializes in the endovascular treatment of stroke, intracranial aneurysms, vascular malformations, atherosclerotic disease of the neck and head vasculature and other vascular pathologies of the head, neck and spine.

“It’s my great honor to chair the inaugural CycleNation in Westchester County,” said Dr. Serulle. “My whole career has been dedicated to treating one stroke patient at a time doing procedures to either reverse the effect of a stroke or to try and prevent someone from having a stroke.”

Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, is the number one killer in the United States and a leading cause of disability. Fortunately, 80 percent of cardiovascular disease, including stroke, is largely preventable through education, simple lifestyle changes and action.

“The American Heart Association is doing what it can to get at the root of the problem, reducing the number of people suffering from hypertension, diabetes, and encouraging tobacco cessation as these are the three biggest reversible risk factors for stroke,” said Dr. Serulle. “Cycling is a great way to achieve this goal – less impact on the joints, and a great cardiovascular workout.”

CycleNation is sponsored by Phelps Hospital Northwell Health and Fujifilm. To learn more about CycleNation, including information about recruiting a team, how to register and fundraising tips, contact Megan Lucas at megan.lucas@heart.org.
