STEMinist Brittany Young

Do you know what it means to be a STEMinist? Go Red for Women’s STEM Goes Red is bringing amazing STEMinists to your home through our Instagram series “Saturday STEM Spotlight.” STEM Goes Red strives to engage young women and mentors, increase the number of women pursuing STEM degrees in higher education, close the gender gap in STEM jobs, and arm students with tools and resources to experience good health and well-being.

In 2019, Brittany Young was a finalist in the American Heart Association’s Empowered to Serve Business Accelerator. The Accelerator works with social entrepreneurs and organizations improving social determinants of health in their community, which are risk factors, especially for underserved populations. The American Heart Association is honored to have Brittany deliver the keynote address at Baltimore’s STEM Goes Red event when we can all come together again in person.

A Baltimore native, Brittany Young has programmed nuclear plants, developed medical devices, and planned satellite explorations, but finds the most satisfaction in her roles in STEM education and service to her community. She became empowered to create opportunities that increase diversity in STEM fields and counter negative narratives.

Brittany is the founder of B360 an organization that utilizes dirt bike culture to end the cycle of poverty, disrupt the prison pipeline, and build bridges in communities.  Through STEM education, community engagement, workforce pipelining and events, the organization is changing the perception of engineers and dirt bike riders.

We are pleased to present Brittany as one of our amazing STEMinists featured in our Saturday STEM Spotlight. Her journey to where she is today has had its challenges, but she is using her experience to educate and empower students. Check out her video on the American Heart Association’s Instagram page @MarylandAHA on Saturday, May 18th, 2020.

The Saturday STEM Spotlight brings the mission of Go Red for Women and STEM Goes Red to students and families in their homes. On Saturdays, the American Heart Association will post a video featuring a STEMinist that will share their journey, experience, and advice with young girls to encourage them to pursue opportunities in STEM and higher education. Follow the American Heart Association on Instagram @MarylandAHA to tune in!
