American Heart Association of Greater Pittsburgh announces Matthew Sousa as Executive Director

Pittsburgh, PA – August 9, 2022 – The American Heart Association (AHA) has named Matthew Sousa as the Executive Director for the Greater Pittsburgh region. The AHA is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, funding innovative research, fighting for stronger public health policies, and providing critical tools and information to save and improve lives.

In this role, Sousa will oversee the volunteer leadership board of directors and staff encompassing Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

“I’m beyond excited to lead this experienced and passionate team to drive change and help provide better heart and brain health in all the communities of Greater Pittsburgh,” said Sousa. “Our volunteers are the backbone of our mission. Here in Pittsburgh, we are so fortunate to have the most incredible Board and volunteers who ensure the American Heart Association continues to provide educational resources and scientific research, as we have for nearly one hundred years. I am honored to work for an organization with so much history and impact.”

Sousa joins the Association with extensive experience in the nonprofit industry. Most recently, as statewide vice president of Development at the Alzheimer’s Association, and prior with Best Buddies International, two nonprofit health organizations based in London, among others.

“Matthew has a true passion for the mission and community impact issues of the American Heart Association, said Liz Campbell, senior vice president of Development. “He is eager to start working with our Board of Directors on key initiatives. His leadership will help us reach more people more quickly where we are needed most. We are very excited to have him join our team.”

Matthew resides in Shadyside with his husband, Alex and miniature Schnauzer, Fritzie. As a family they enjoy traveling, live music and the theater.
