When it comes to the Heart Ball, getting a dedicated chair is key to a successful event. Luckily, for the West Virginia team and the Ohio Valley Heart Ball, they have had an incredible pair of chairs for 30 years! Since 1995, John and Melissa Rataiczak have led the charge for the American Heart Association with the annual gala, which continues to thrive year after year.
For the Rataiczaks, it’s not just about putting on a fun event. “I’ve always said that the Heart Ball saves lives,” said John Rataiczak. This has been the couple’s mantra since they started helping, but the event became more personal for them in August of 2022 when Melissa suffered a stroke. She credits her time as the Heart Ball co-chair as for her knowing the signs of a stroke – F.A.S.T. – which caused her to take action and get to the hospital. She worked hard, entering physical and speech therapy and doing anything and everything she could to build back her strength and mobility. Then, she made her triumphant recovery debut at the 2023 Ohio Valley Heart Ball, where she danced with John for the first time since her event.
“Their commitment to improving lives in the Ohio Valley is nothing short of inspiring,” said Michelle Anderson, executive director for the American Heart Association’s West Virginia team. “You only have to talk to them for a few minutes to feel their passion and excitement in bringing the Heart Ball to life. Here’s to the next thirty years!”
Together, John and Melissa Rataiczak continue to help the Ohio Valley in the fight against heart disease and stroke by throwing one of the most popular and fabulous parties in the region. The American Heart Association is proud to recognize the dedication and commitment of this incredible couple.
