National Walking Day in the Greater Washington Region brings fitness, fun and learning

On April 2, 2025, crowds gathered at the St. James in Springfield, VA for a morning of fitness, learning and fun in celebration of National Walking Day, locally sponsored by Sheehy Auto Stores.

For decades, the American Heart Association (AHA) has championed the importance of physical activity in communities across the country. That’s why we created National Walking Day more than a decade ago—to encourage everyone to move more and stress less. Physical activity, like walking, reduces stress, boosts mood, and promotes overall well-being.

At this National Walking Day event, trainers and chefs from The St. James led participants through yoga, pilates, tabata, Zumba and healthy cooking stations. Team AHA led demonstrations on how to do hands-only CPR and save a life. DC’s rugby team, The Old Glory led rugby mini games. And WASH-FM’s street team was onsite with music and giveaways.

“We hope you all leave today feeling strong, energized and inspired to keep moving,” said Lauren Culbertson, Chief Marketing Officer at Sheehy Auto Stores in her closing remarks. “At Sheehy Auto Stores, we believe movement fuels a better life. We’re proud to support the American Heart Association and events like National Walking Day and the Heart Walk that get the community moving around a great cause.”

We’d like to thank Sheehy Auto Stores for its support for a healthier DMV, The St. James for hosting the event and The Old Gory DC for leading a rugby-themed fitness session.

National Walking Day in the Greater Washington Region was covered on the Washington Report, ABC 7, NBC 4, Telemundo 44 and CBS 9.

Keep the fun going and set a new walking goal by registering for the Greater Washington Heart Walk, happening on November 1.
