The American Heart Association applauds the plan to protect public health and support tobacco prevention

The American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, issued the following statement through Whitney Perry Parrish, State Government Relations Director for the American Heart Association regarding the legislative budget proposal to enact a $1.50 tax on all tobacco and nicotine products statewide:
“The American Heart Association-Maine applauds Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee chairs Senator Peggy Rotundo and Representative Drew Gattine for their bold and forward-thinking leadership in proposing a $1.50 tobacco tax increase in the state’s biennial budget proposal. This decisive action highlights lawmakers’ commitment to protecting the health and well-being of all Mainers, especially children.
“Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Maine. The harms from using tobacco products are regressive, leaving some communities to suffer disproportionately from tobacco-related diseases, disability, death and significant health care costs. By prompting more people to quit and cut back on their use of tobacco products, raising tobacco taxes will reduce both the regressive harms and costs.
“The $1.50 proposed increase would bring the tax from $2 to $3.50 per pack of 20 cigarettes. Maine has long been a leader in fully funding its tobacco prevention and cessation programs at levels recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These programs are vital for educating the public about the dangers of tobacco and providing resources to help individuals quit. We are hopeful that this proposal will continue to support these essential, life-saving initiatives.
“The tax increase will also generate critical funding that can benefit Maine’s communities. Evidence shows that tobacco taxes improve public health, save lives, and lower health care costs, creating a ripple effect of positive outcomes across the state.
“We commend the budget committee for taking a stand for Maine’s health and are eager to see the proposal’s full enactment. The American Heart Association-Maine looks forward to working together to build a healthier, tobacco-free future for all Mainers.”
