New resources strengthen lifesaving readiness for coaches, athletes and families across high-volume youth sports programs

WILMINGTON, Del., Dec. 3, 2025 — Four Delaware youth-serving organizations that support high-volume sports programs and diverse young athletes are receiving CPR and First Aid in Youth Sports Training Kits to help ensure coaches, athletes and families are prepared to respond in a cardiac emergency.. The American Heart Association, a global force changing the future of health for all, worked with Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP, a local CPR in Youth Sports sponsor, to help make this distribution possible.

“CPR saves lives,” said Joy A. Barrist, partner at Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP. “Potter Anderson & Corroon is proud to help bring resources to programs that foster growth, mentorship and opportunity for young people, and we value the chance to support the American Heart Association in delivering lifesaving training where it is needed most.”

Cardiac arrest can occur at any time and in any setting, including practices, games and recreational activities. In many cases, the first person available to respond is a coach, parent or teammate. The CPR and First Aid in Youth Sports Training Kit uses a structured, facilitator-led model that guides participants through CPR, AED use and first aid instruction in less than one hour. The training helps individuals build confidence and readiness, so they are prepared to act until emergency medical professionals arrive.

The placements were coordinated by Yinka Isichei, Community Impact Manager for the American Heart Association in Delaware, who worked directly with each organization to assess training needs and support implementation.

Each kit includes Mini Anne manikins, AED training simulators, training DVDs and streaming access, facilitator guides and all materials needed to train 10 to 20 people at one time. The curriculum is designed specifically for youth sports environments and does not require facilitators to have previous CPR training.

The following organizations were selected based on their outreach, participation levels and service to diverse youth populations across New Castle County:

  • BPG Sports Group
  • My Sister’s Keeper
  • Boys and Girls Club of New Castle
  • The Teen Warehouse

These organizations engage youth of all ages in athletics, mentoring programs and after-school activities, providing trusted spaces where training resources such as these kits can have meaningful and lasting impact.

“These training kits are placed where they will make an immediate and lasting difference,” said Jim Murphy, Executive Director of the American Heart Association in Delaware. “Ensuring that coaches and families have the tools to respond in an emergency strengthens Delaware’s chain of survival and supports our continued work to build a Nation of Lifesavers.”

Immediate bystander CPR intervention can double or even triple the chance of survival during a cardiac arrest. Expanding access to hands-on training helps ensure more individuals feel confident stepping in when every second matters.

This effort supports the Association’s Nation of Lifesavers initiative, which empowers people of all ages to learn CPR and understand their ability to respond in a cardiac emergency. To learn more about CPR visit heart.org/cpr.
