American Heart Association talks about Women and Heart Disease at the National Diversity Women’s Business Leadership Conference

The American Heart Association hosted a panel at the Diversity Women’s Business Leadership Conference on Thursday, November 14th discussing women and heart disease. The event was held at the Gaylord Resort in National Harbor, Maryland.

Panel Moderator:

  • Pamela Garmon Johnson, the Vice President of Health Equity & National Partnerships from the American Heart Association.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Yolandra Hancock, Medical Director of CRC Wellness Center and Founder of Delta Health & Wellness LLC.
  • Cheree’ Johnson, Deputy General Counsel/Chief Intellectual Property Counsel of McCormick & Co., Inc.
  • Dr. Roquell Wyche, Cardiologist at Chesapeake and Washington Heart Care and the Greater Washington American Heart Association Board President.

The panelists discussed that by adopting a 360˚ wellness approach to health, women live healthier lives. The panel talked about a holistic approach to health, including the importance of healthy nutrition and physical activity along with maintaining healthy relationships and good mental health. Most of the discussion was centered around one of the groups at greatest risk for cardiovascular disease related deaths, black women. For example, one of the many facts stated during the panel was that more than half of all black women have cardiovascular disease (57%), and that about one in three black female deaths are from cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease is a danger to all women. However, by making lifestyle changes like, eating more fruits and vegetables, increasing daily physical activity, nurturing quality relationships and learning positive ways to de-stress, women can fight the number one killer, heart disease.

We are thrilled to have been a part of this conference and raise awareness of how women can live their longest, healthiest lives!
