How to “Eat Smart” This November

As we get closer to the Holiday season and colder weather approaches, it is easy to get “off track” with your eating and exercise routine. Who doesn’t want to reach for that bacon wrapped hot dog over the vegetable tray?  Living a healthy lifestyle is all about balance and with Eat Smart Day kicking off Eat Smart Month on November 1st, we’re here to help you make the “smart” choice all month long!

Not only does eating healthy and exercising make your heart happy, it leaves you feeling energized and helps keep cholesterol and blood pressure at a healthy level for your body. High blood pressure affects about 33 percent of the U.S. adult population and doubles the risk for heart disease. About 32 million Americans have dangerously high total blood cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or higher.  Simultaneously controlling your high blood pressure, also known as HBP,  and high cholesterol may cut your risk for heart disease by half or more. Interestingly, researchers found that fewer than one in three people achieve this goal.

Here are a few easy tips to remember to keep you feeling Healthy for Good:

  • Stick to a simple eating pattern-Concentrate on smaller portions, adding fiber-rich foods to keep you feeling full.
  • Build a better plate-add color to your plate with fresh fruits and vegetables and limit foods high in sugar, salt and fat.
  • Make smarter substitutions– Try substitutions that won’t compromise texture and flavor by replacing a cup of heavy cream with yogurt or snacks that are baked instead of fried.
  • Healthy eating starts at home– Turn cooking into a family activity and help each other understand nutrition labels. Limit your intake of sugary drinks, added salt and foods high in calories.
