Pennsylvania Executive Steps into Chairperson Role for American Heart Association’s Eastern States Region Board of Directors

Pittsburgh, PA –  Sandra (Sandy) Volpe has assumed a two-year term as chair of the board of directors for the Eastern States region of the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building longer, healthier lives free of cardiovascular diseases and strokes. Volpe served as chairperson-elect July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023.

Volpe joined the Eastern States Region Board of Directors in 2019 and has served on the board’s Nominating Committee. She has a long history of service to the American Heart Association, including serving as a member of the Association’s former Great Rivers Affiliate Board of Directors chairperson of the Greater Pittsburgh Board of Directors, member of the Greater Pittsburgh board’s Leadership Development Committee. She has served as chairperson of the Greater Pittsburgh Go Red for Woman campaign, the Greater Pittsburgh Heart Challenge and was named a 2021 Women of Impact nominee. Volpe retired from her role as senior vice president for strategic planning, communications and business development solutions at FedEx Ground in 2022.

“This work is very personal to me. I am honored to support the American Heart Association and collaborate with our outstanding volunteers,” said Volpe. “It is my privilege to lead the Eastern States Region Board of Directors as we work to accelerate results toward our mission to create a lasting impact on the health of our region’s communities.”

American Heart Association Eastern States volunteers and staff serve nearly 75 million people who live on the eastern seaboard of the U.S. The Eastern States region includes 13 states and Washington, D.C., and five of the top 25 metropolitan areas in the U.S.

In support of the Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives, the Eastern States region raises revenue to transform the health and well-being of local communities by providing science-based information, health resources, community programs and patient support. As the second-largest funder of cardiovascular research next to the federal government, the Association is also a driver of change through its advocacy efforts, public and professional education and community outreach including CPR services.

In her role as chairperson, Volpe will work alongside other volunteer leaders to advance critical mission and fundraising priorities for the Association, including its 2024 Impact Goal to advance cardiovascular health for all. As the American Heart Association enters its centennial year in 2024, areas of focus will build on existing efforts around removing barriers to health care access and quality, addressing issues of nutrition and food security, hypertension reduction and more.

“As the American Heart Association nears its 100th anniversary, we are deeply grateful to volunteer leaders like Sandy who are helping advance our mission into the next century,” said Nicole Aiello Sapio, Ed.D., executive vice president of the American Heart Association’s Eastern States region. “I’ve been grateful for Sandy’s dedication this past year as chairperson-elect, and I’m excited to welcome her into the chairperson role and watch her continued efforts to champion health equity and bold solutions for a world of longer, healthier lives.”

Volpe also serves on the board of directors for Republic Services, Inc., an industry leader in U.S. recycling and non-hazardous solid waste. She is also a national trustee on the board of trustees of Kent State University and is the incoming board chair of the National Advisory Board for the Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship at Kent State University. Volpe received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Kent State University and Master of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business.
