Heart disease has severely impacted my family for decades.
In fact, heart disease has been the leading cause of death in my family. My father was only 45-years -old when he died on the way to the hospital suffering from a heart attack. Not long after my father’s death, my grandfather passed away due to a heart attack, as well. He was in his early 60’s.
The loss was tremendous and long lasting. They both appeared physically fit, active, and didn’t have poor eating habits. Their deaths were sudden and deeply tragic. Even though we have lost dozens of family members to this terrible disease, very little has been done as a family to raise awareness and actively control the risk factors.
I learned about the American Heart Association’s efforts to reduce heart disease and was truly inspired by their work. The level of passion, dedication, and the energy that goes into advancing their programs is vast in our community. As the 2016 Go Red For Women® chair, I not only speak from the heart about combating heart disease and stroke, but I’ve involved my company, bizWin Strategies, my family and some of Buffalo’s best leaders.
Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year and affects women of all ethnicities. Yet, I know, real progress can be made, if the right people are mobilized.
My goal? To champion heart health in Western New York. I want to dramatically increase the level of participation, by women and men, to support the Go Red For Women® campaign. Through education, awareness, and social support we can make a huge difference to reduce heart disease in women.
Remember that early detection can lead to prevention. Anyone can suffer from heart disease. Schedule a Well-Woman visit or make an appointment with your doctor to evaluate your heart health, know your numbers, make healthy food choices, and exercise 30-minutes each day. Then ….encourage your friends and family members to do the same.
It could save your life or the life of someone you love.
This is American Heart Month.
Let’s. Get. Proactive.
