The American Heart Association, the largest voluntary health organization fighting heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases, announces Andrew Bond of General Dynamics Electric Boat as chair of the 2022 Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk. The annual event will take place on Sunday, October 2 at Rocky Neck State Park.
Bond will lead the organizational and recruitment efforts in eastern Connecticut. He will call on thousands of area volunteers, survivors, walkers, and business leaders to step up to fight cardiovascular diseases.
“I am honored to chair this year’s Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk,” said Electric Boat Vice President of Planning, Andrew Bond. “Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and my goal is to help support the mission of the American Heart Association to provide a healthier future for our communities. Most of us have been touched by heart disease or stroke and by supporting the Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk, we have an opportunity to truly make a difference.”
Studies have shown walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health. The benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
“It’s never too late to adopt a healthy lifestyle, and no step is too small,” Bond said. “The Heart Walk is a great first step toward being more active, no matter what your age or experience.”
The Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk will attempt to raise $200,000 to fund research and education to fight heart disease and stroke. Each day, nearly 2,400 Americans die from a cardiovascular disease. That’s an average of one death every 37 seconds. A leading risk factor for heart attack and stroke is lack of physical activity. Research has found that individuals may gain two hours of life expectancy for every one hour of regular, vigorous exercise they do.
“We are grateful to Andrew Bond for joining us to lead this year’s Eastern Connecticut Heart Walk,” said Adria Giordano, Executive Director of the American Heart Association. “Andrew’s passion for progress and commitment to our mission, aligns with our Heart walk efforts. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the health of everyone in this community.”
As the Vice President of Planning for General Dynamics Electric Boat Andrew Bond is responsible for the planning organization that integrates and optimizes business systems and processes across the enterprise to enable the design, engineering, and construction of the next generation of nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy.
